In recent years, many applications to improve the support of business processes have been purchased
and established in companies. These applications often process the same or similar data objects.
In this way, for example, product data is used in marketing, production and quality management applications.
The product data must therefore be maintained in different applications. The result is inconsistent data:
Reports from different operative systems are only partly comparable and the integration of the data in a
data warehouse becomes more difficult.
Master data management includes organisational and technical concepts to solve problems at a company level.
Data that is used in various applications is thereby separated, saved and maintained separately. The responsibility
for the upkeep is determined and the semantics of the data specified, and made accessible to all.
Applications can reference this data.
Technically, master data management can be realised in different ways.
What is important, are well defined and published processes, roles and further agreements.
The implementation of master data management concepts is a long-term task and
requires a good long-term organisation (see Data governance).
MDM is also suitable for the storing of conformed dimensions for data warehouse applications.
